Harriet Ann died 15th April 1937. Address of 73 Griffin
Road. She was 67 and widow of Herbert William Ashton Jones,
a machinist in Woolwich Arsenal. Cause of her death was
"Drowning. Suicide whilst of unsound mind". An inquest was
held 19th
April 1937., by W.H.Whitehouse, Coroner for S.E.London.
When she married she was 22, spinster of 51 Southwark Park
Road. Note that Richard and Georgiana Mathews were the
witnesses at her wedding. This was her cousin(not eldest
sister) and brother in law.
The marriage took place at the Parish Church of St. Ann's,
Bermondsey.
Entry in Woolwich Gazette and Plumstead News of Tuesday
April 20, 1937. Seen at British Library - Newspaper Dept.
Colindale. "Plumstead widow's suicide". Depressed at
anniversary of husband's death. Stated to have suffered
from depression on
the anniversary of her husband's birthday (March 18) and
his death (April 1), Mrs. HARRIET ANN JONES of 73 Griffin
Road, Plumstead, was found dead in 7 inches of water in the
bath of her home on Thursday night. At the Lewisham Inquest
yesterday
the Coroner recorded a verdict of "Suicide while of unsound
mind". Her son, Herbert Walter Jones, also of 73 Griffin
Road, said his mother was the widow of a former machinist
at Woolwich Arsenal, and was 67 years of age. Coroner -
"Has she ever
threatened to commit suicide?" "She threatened once by coal
gas". The son said he last saw his mother alive on Thursday
morning when he went to work. When he got home at night he
did not see his mother, and thought she had gone out. He
went to
his club and whilst there he was called by his sister. She
told him that on going upstairs she saw her mother's
clothes and on looking around the house found her mother in
the bath. It was obvious that she was dead. He sent for the
police.
There was no letter or note left behind. Police Inspector
Symons said there was only about seven inches of water in
the bath. There was no suspicion of foul play. Dr. A. Mair
of Lakedale Road, Plumstead gave evidence of being called
to the
house, and finding the woman had been dead for between
eight and ten hours. The stomach was empty of food. Death
was due to suffocation from drowning.
